Putting It to the Test

The Verdict: Wet Shaves Done Right

Prior to testing out a number of the best bald head shavers in a dedicated movement to find the very best, I was shaving my head with a straight razor.

There’s something about a little bit of water, a dollop of my favorite shaving cream and a razor to the noggin that sends shivers down my spine. The sound? Stellar. The shave? Immaculate. But, the time that it takes? Not so great.

That’s why as I’ve been testing the best bald head shavers, I’ve been looking for something I won’t feel funky about using wet. Sure, some of the products I’ve tested are water-resistant, but that word always confuses me. Like, how much water can touch it before the “resistance” stops resisting? Waterproof is a word I trust much more.

That’s why when I heard Remington Balder Pro Head Shaver was completely waterproof, I knew I had to test it out for myself.

Headcount: Just the one it comes with

Grip: Ergonomic and easy to hold

As I’ve been testing more and more bald head shavers like the Skull Shaver Pitbull Gold Pro and Hammacher Schlemmer’s Ergonomic Head Shaver, I’ve become more and more used to that classic overhead hold seen in most models that allow for a more “chaotic” shave. Meaning, you can just rub the shaver around your whole head without thinking twice to rid of hair.

Remington’s Balder Pro follows suit for what I’m becoming used to with bald head shavers, which I absolutely now prefer. It’s so much easier to control and makes shaving happen in a flash.

Using 5 dual-track shaving heads, this shaver allows for a shave in just under two minutes. It’s supposed to pivot and flex with your movements, but I expected this head design to be slightly more malleable. In my experience, it was a little less moveable than others I’ve tried. Sure, it still wiggles and jiggles, but not nearly as much as other brands.

The hair taken is collected inside of the device for an effortless clean-up post-shave just like other models. The blades are a bit scratchy and not as smooth as some others, but it’s nothing too overwhelming.

This model does not have a LED-lit LCD screen, but it does have battery and charging lights that let you know when the battery is dying and when your device is charging.

Speaking of battery life, the shaver runs cordless for 50 minutes total. This definitely places Remington on a shorter charge level, but 50 minutes isn’t something to get too upset about.

As mentioned above, something that places the Remington Balder Pro in a world incomparable is the fact that it’s totally waterproof. You can use it in the shower or with shaving cream and water for a speedy wet shave you don’t really get too frequently with bald head shavers. This also makes using the device that much easier, because by using in the shower, you can kill two birds with one stone by washing all those loose hairs off your head as you shave.

The shaver also has an awesome grip that won’t slip out of your hands when wet.

Pricing is generally the same on most websites, give or take around $10.

On Amazon, you’ll typically be able to find the Remington Balder Pro for about $70, the same on Remington’s actual website. This is a solid price or a bald head shaver because it sits in a spot most other bald head shavers are priced at.

At Walmart, prices vary every so often, but you can currently catch this bald head shaver for $85. Yeah, $15 extra might seem like a tough buy, but if you’re picking anything else up at Walmart, it could be the most convenient.

Because the Remington Balder Pro is waterproof, I wanted to try shaving both dry in front of the mirror and wet inside of the shower. I didn’t use any shaving cream for either test, I just went to town with the buzzer itself with and without adding water.

When turning the device on, it felt a little louder than the bald head shavers I’ve tried previously. This spooked me a little bit, but I pushed through my fears and started at it on my head. Hair was coming off relatively quickly as expected, but the shave itself was a little rougher than I would have liked. It felt slightly sandpapery, but it didn’t necessarily hurt. It was just a bit of a change from the softer shaver heads I’ve come to know.

As the shave persisted, I found myself going over some spots the buzzer missed the first time, which honestly is to be expected with most bald head shavers. Nonetheless, the shave was exceptionally smooth which I was thankful for. After finishing half of my head, I jumped in the shower and hoped I wouldn’t leave electrocuted.

Shaving in the shower was a breeze. For me, the hair reacted a little better to a wet shave than it did dry. The grip worked exceptionally well, so I didn’t worry once that the device would slip out of my hand. The only flaw is that I personally don’t have a mirror in my shower, so I couldn’t really see what I was doing. Additionally, the smoothness of my shave didn’t change at all, I was still getting the same sleek results wet.

After my shower, I became way too curious. If the Balder Pro is waterproof, would it work after being fully submerged in water? I can’t think of a single situation in which I would ever need to find out, but my mind was racing with some mad scientist thoughts. I needed to experiment.

The answer? Completely. Again, I really don’t suggest shaving underwater, but if you have to, I guess you could.

Whilst using the Remington Balder Pro, I didn’t run into many issues aside from how rough it felt on my head. I mentioned that sandpaper feeling earlier, and it just made the experience feel a little obtrusive.

The skin on my head is occasionally sensitive, so during the testing, I was worried I’d leave with a slew of razor bumps covering my noggin. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case at all. Maybe the roughness added to a cleaner shave? I’m not exactly sure, but the feeling wasn’t my favorite.

Aside from that, I really can’t express anything I didn’t like about this shaver.

If you’re looking for a fully waterproof bald head shaver you can feel comfortable with using in even the wettest of wet situations, Remington has you covered. This is a carefree shower shave done right. It’s not going to shock you, it won’t break mid-shave and it’ll turn back on every time after using in the shower. Well, if it’s charged, that is.

If you’re shaving in the shower or using shaving cream and water from the sink, yes, you should purchase the Remington Balder Pro. There are some other water-resistant options that will cost you a little less (and cause for a less rough shave), but I haven’t seen anything this effectively waterproof in my experience so far.

Essentially, water and the Remington Balder Pro are BFFs. You can’t beat that.
