LISBON — A former New York resident originally charged with attempted murder and felonious assault for a razor blade attack entered a guilty plea to just the felonious assault on the morning his jury trial was set to begin.

Naquan McCorkle, 36, previously of Lynbrook, N.Y., appeared Monday in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court before Judge Scott Washam. He was flanked by his defense attorneys, Chris Amato and Frank Williams Jr.

County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Ryan Weikart advised the court that as part of the plea agreement, the attempted murder charge will be dismissed.

Weikart said he’ll be recommending a prison term of seven years, plus any “tail” that’s required since the charge is a qualifying count for additional time that could be tacked onto the sentence by the parole board. After the hearing, he explained that the “tail” equals half of the imposed sentence, meaning with seven years, the parole board could add up to an additional 3 1/2 years.

Sentencing has been scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Nov. 2.

Washam reviewed the possible penalties with McCorkle, including a minimum term of two years up to three years and a maximum term of eight years up to 12 years, along with a $15,000 fine.

Amato indicated he’ll be asking for a lesser sentence or community control.

Both Weikart and Amato said the defendant had some mental issues that will be addressed at sentencing. McCorkle had been found competent to stand trial based on a two separate competency evaluations ordered as part of the case.

The charges against McCorkle resulted after Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the former Trails End Motel on state Route 45 in Lisbon on Nov. 30, 2020, and found Brian K. Custer Jr., had been slashed in the head and back with a razor blade knife. Custer was McCorkle’s roommate at the time.
