John Travis Ross is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 4
A Vicksburg man accused of flying a drone loaded with marijuana and other contraband over the fence at a prison in Pearl has pleaded guilty to drug charges.
The drone crashed into the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility during the early morning hours of Aug. 6, 2020. The drone got caught in security nets above the facility’s razor-wire fences, authorities said.
The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office used its own technology to trace the drone’s flight path and identify John Travis Ross and another man as suspects, Mississippi Department of Corrections officials said at the time. MDOC security cameras captured the drone launch on video.
Ross pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court to possession with intent to distribute less than 30 kilograms of marijuana. He faces a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison when he is sentenced on Aug. 4.
