This upcoming primary election offers voters a stark contrast in the race for state representative, in the 10th Legislative District, Position 1. The incumbent Greg Gilday has consistently voted not on legislation that would improve women’s access to contraception, prescriptions for common infections, post-partum conditions and yes, when necessary, abortion.
Clyde Shavers, the Democratic candidate, supports a women’s reproductive freedom and access to health care.
Gilday has also voted against every reasonable piece of gun safety legislation in the last session, voting no to limits on large capacity magazines; no to prohibit open carry of certain weapons at public events and voting no to restrict “ghost guns.”
Clyde Shavers is a veteran Navy officer and the son of a career police officer. He supports the Second Amendment but as Justice Scalia wrote in his 2008 opinion; “Like most rights, the right secured by the Second Amendment is not unlimited … the right was not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose.”
I know Clyde supports prohibiting the carrying of weapons at public demonstrations, such as at the state Capitol and at school board meetings.
Clyde supports a prohibition on “ghost guns”. Such weapons are intended to be untraceable and are outside the bounds of reasonable gun safety regulation.
Clyde Shavers supports a woman’s right to health care and reasonable gun safety regulation.
Join me in voting for Clyde Shavers on Aug. 2.
