Talking the business of sports
One of boxing's most heated rivalries in recent memory will see a trilogy fight Saturday when Canelo Alvarez defends the unified super middleweight title against Gennadiy Golovkin. Their 12-round main event tops a boxing card from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The pay-per-view main card is set for 8 p.m. ET. It has been four years since the boxers last met in the second of two classic showdowns held exactly one year apart. They fought to a disputed split draw in their September 2017 meeting before Alvarez was awarded a razor-thin majority decision in the sequel.
Alvarez is a -500 favorite (risk $500 to win $100), while Golovkin is priced at +380 in the latest Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin 3 odds from Caesars Sportsbook. The over/under for total rounds completed is 10.5, with the Over favored at -230 and the Under fetching a price of +175. Before locking in any Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin III picks, make sure you see the boxing predictions and betting advice from SportsLine expert Peter Kahn.
A three-time Boxing Writers Association of America Cus D'Amato Manager of the Year nominee, Kahn has his finger on the pulse of what's going on inside and outside the ring. As one of boxing's most influential managers, Kahn has guided numerous world champions and currently sports a roster of 15 fighters. His company, Fight Game Advisors, manages former undisputed lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr., current female undisputed super middleweight champ Franchón Crews-Dezurn and rising junior middleweight star Xander Zayas.
Kahn is an astounding 34-9 picking fights for SportsLine since boxing returned following the pandemic-induced hiatus, netting a profit of $3,972. His notable wins include telling SportsLine members in February of last year that his strongest play on the Canelo (-4000) vs. Avni Yildirim (+1500) fight was to take the favorite by stoppage in the third round at 5/1 odds. Alvarez delivered, and those who followed the play made $500 for every $100 wagered. Anyone who has followed Wise's combat sports picks is way up.
Now, with Canelo vs. Golovkin III in sight, Kahn has studied Canelo vs. GGG from every angle and identified the best value in the boxing odds. You can only see his confident prop bets and money-line picks at SportsLine.
Although casual observers might wonder why a trilogy is needed when Alvarez has a win and a draw in the first two, those who watched the classic matchups know it could just as easily be 2-0 in Golovkin's favor. Nearly all major media outlets and respected boxing observers scored the first fight in favor of Golovkin by a narrow margin, and many believed he won the second meeting as well.
The stylistic matchup proved to be a boxing purist's delight as it pitted Golovkin's natural aggression and straight-forward style against the precision counter punching and ring generalship of Alvarez. Both fighters say their rivalry has become personal as the trilogy approaches.
Although they showed mutual respect ahead of their first two matchups, Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs), who holds all four major super middleweight belts, says he has soured on his rival because of comments Golovkin made to the media following their second fight.
For his part, Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs), who is still the unified middleweight champion, remains bitter about the decisions in the first two matchups and how they might have impacted his legacy. He was undefeated before the first fight and the second remains the sole defeat on his record.
Alvarez, 32, is now one of boxing biggest stars while the 40-year-old Golovkin has slipped from the spotlight ahead of what might be the final appearance of his storied career. See who Kahn is backing right here.
