MARIETTA — Two local businesses are collecting items for the victims of the floods in Kentucky.
Quality Care Associates and Rockstar Wellness, both of Marietta, are collecting items for distribution to areas of need in Eastern Kentucky, Jeff Patey, owner of Quality Care, said.
Torrential rains caused massive flooding July 28 in Eastern Kentucky, Western Virginia and Southern West Virginia, but the bulk of the destruction was in Kentucky where at least 37 people were killed. The dead included a teenager from Perry County, Ky., who was volunteering in the recovery.
The idea for the collection effort was Chris Patey, Patey’s wife, he said.
“She has the most amazing heart.” said Rachel Burnham of Rockstar Wellness.
Among the items requested are soap and body washes, toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoo, combs and hair brushes, disposable razors and shaving cream, femine hygiene products, fans and dehumidifiers, dog and cat food and water and food bowls, bleach, mops, buckets, brooms and sponges, water hoses, baby wipes and diapers, hand sanitizer, rubber gloves and Chlorox wipes and non-perishable food items.
“We’ll take whatever we can get,” Patey said.
Monetary donations also will be accepted by both locations, Patey said. Money will allow organizers to buy more items that are needed or haven’t been donated, he said.
Items can be taken to Quality Care at 416 Front St. and Rockstar Wellness at 225 Second St.
Organizers also will be at the River, Trails and Ales Festival on Saturday at Muskingum Park in Marietta to collect donations, Burnham said. They will be at the festival from 3-7 p.m., she said.
“People are welcome to drop off items there, too,” she said.
Among the donations so far are cleaning supplies, personal care products, pet food and supplies and baby needs, Burnham said.
“We got a good variety so far,” Burnham said.
The hope is to fill the lobby, she said.
The plan is to take a truck laden with the items to Kentucky next week, Patey said.
“We will be collecting through the 16th and probably drive down there on the 18th or 19th,” he said.
In Kentucky, the supplies will be taken where needed as identified by the emergency responders, Patey said. Distribution could also end up going door-to-door, he said.
