A baby that was pictured being handed to a US soldier over a razor-wire fence amid the chaos in Kabul following the Taliban takeover has been safely reunited with their father, according to the US Marine Corps.

Major Jim Stenger, a spokesperson for the Marine Corps, told NBC News's Geoff Bennett that the baby was treated on site at a medical treatment facility and is now safe at the airport with their father.

"This is a true example of the professionalism of the Marines on site, who are making quick decisions in a dynamic situation in support of evacuation operations," Stenger said.

Video of the incident, which was shared across social media, captured surging crowds at Kabul's international airport, where hundreds have gathered in desperate attempt to flee the new Taliban rule following the collapse of the US-backed Afghan government earlier this week.

American soldiers are stationed at the airport to keep order as military and civilian evacuation flights continue out of the country, but the scene underscores the fear among many who are urgently trying to escape Afghanistan.

As of Friday, some 10,000 people were waiting for flights from the airport, according to CNN correspondent Clarissa Ward.
